Rocket Candy

In light of last year’s wildly successful Christmas Tree Rocketry which made it all the way to ESPN, we’ve been brainstorming a few ways to outdo ourselves this year. Initially we were experimenting with a steam powered jet engine, and also some home-brew combustion-powered engines made from a few readily available products. After some successful testing, we decided to focus our efforts on the flammable variety:

We built a jig for an old spring loaded scale in order to get some force readings for the four engines we tested. The third-to-last engine gave us around 26 lbs of continuous thrust for about 1.5 seconds. However, it didn’t explode either (we were hoping it wouldn’t): But this also means we can build it bigger!!

Stay tuned!
